Weekly Discovery: Johnny Drille


We’re sure you might have come across the name of the singer before and probably not paid attention to him.

Johnny Drille is a freshman in the music industry with great potential. In 2013, he was a contestant and finalist on Project Fame West Africa. He was listed as one of ‘10 Nigerian artistes to 'blow' in 2016’ by Pulse Music editor Joey Akan

The Benin City native is a master of percussion, instrumentation, and the best of lyrics. From his viral ‘Awww’ cover, to his now trending ‘Wait for me’, the singer leads the new generation of folk, rock and Afro fusion sounds. He is next in line”, Akan wrote. 



The singer whose real name is John Ighodaro made his debut in January 2015 with a cover of Di’ja’s ‘Awww’, the singer gave it a country swing and embellished it with guitar strings. 

Following this he released his first original song in June, 2015, ‘ Love don’t lie’ on which his showcases his songwriting expertise. Drille also produced the song himself. Two months later he released another love song titled ‘Wait For Me‘. 


The song producer joined the ‘Hello’ wave and collaborated with R&B artist, Byno on a cover of Adele’s hit song. On their version, the create an alternative melody infused with lyrics delivered in pidgin English. 

Inspired by his parents and their love story, in February he released a folk song titled ‘My beautiful love’

In a time when duets have been scarce, Johnny Drille collaborates with Niniola on a duet titled ‘Start all over’. 

In an industry where everyone is vying for commercial success and following the bandwagon of creating mainstream pop music, Johnny Drille cleaves to his originality and a course in alternative, folk and gospel music - definitely one worth adding to your playlist.
